Turkey Writer Of The Year Award
Food journalists should dig out their favourite turkey recipes for a chance to win the British Turkey Recipe Writer of the Year award. The piece must have been published in the past 18 months. Bettmann 100 Photo Contest
Corbis is inviting entries for the Bettmann 100 Photo Contest, organised in celebration of Otto Bettmann’s 100th birthday. It is open to professional photographers, and the judges select 100 entries that best capture the zeitgeist of the early 21st century. Judges include Josef Csallos, picture editor at Der Spiegel; Kathleen Klech, photography director at Condé Nast Traveller; Tom Reynolds, design director at the Sunday Times Magazine; and Dr Mary Panzer, contributing editor at American Photo. The winning photographs will be accepted into the Bettmann Archive, the first time it has been open to new work since 1985. Deadline is 22 August. Corbis will accept five entries per photographer.

Grafik magazine, formerly known as Graphics International, has been revamped. The redesign aims to make the magazine’s graphic design element more prominent to compete with imported journals. Designer Nick Tweedie of MadeThought says the magazine is “more reactive and relevant to its content and less of a box-filling exercise”. The title has also downsized. “The previous size was a little unwieldy; a smaller size felt more comfortable and made it easier to file for future reference,” he adds. The fonts used are designed by Herb Lubalin: ITC Avant Garde (also designed with Tom Carnase) and ITC Lubalin Graph. “We felt that people would expect us to use Helvetica; it was a conscious decision to kick against that preconception and come up with something a little different,” says Tweedie. “Lubalin Graph is very similar to Avant Garde but its slab serif makes for easier reading. Both fonts look harmonious together and there is a bit of a nod to classic magazine and newspaper design where a serif and a sans serif are used in tandem.” The use of imagery was one of the hardest elements to balance, he adds. “While trying to remain respectful of other designers’ work shown, we still felt we needed a sense of freedom and scale away from neat columns of ‘squared-up’ images that would result in looking generic. We felt it important to achieve a sense of ‘freedom with control’.”
