Professor Purvis gets Oxford post

Stewart Purvis, the former editor-inchief and chief executive of ITN turned academic, has been appointed visiting broadcast media professor to Oxford University.

Purvis, who retired from the news broadcaster last year after 31 years, and became the first Professor of Television Journalism at City University, will be Oxford University’s News International Visiting Professor of Broadcast Media for the 2004/2005 academic year.

Purvis will give four public lectures at the university next year.

The position is associated with Green College, home of the Reuters Foundation programme for visiting journalist fellows.

Previous holders include documentary maker Roger Graef and the BBC’s director of radio Jenny Abramsky.
