The Citizen, Gloucester, has been named regional daily newspaper of the year in the Newspaper Society editorial awards.
Judges described The Citizen as a paper that “punches well above its weight in a small city”. The award was picked up by editor Ian Mean.
The Bristol Evening Post was named daily campaigning newspaper of the year for its One in Four Cancer campaign inspired by a journalist on the paper who died of cancer.
The Post also won the award for community daily newspaper of the year for the “Really Useful Invention”.
School children were encouraged to come up with inventions which were then made by local businesses.
Journalist of the year was the Hull Daily Mail’s Rick Lyon for his in-depth coverage of the Rachel Moran murder case.
The Cumberland News was named weekly community newspaper of the year for its Countryside awards.
Winner of the weekly campaigning newspaper was the Worksop Guardian for its battle to save a local hospital’s A&E unit.
Jonathan McCambridge of The Belfast Telegraph was named young journalists of the year for a scoop on a Peterborough councillor who was forced to resign after making derogatory remarks about the Irish.
The Western Mail’s Rob Norman was photographer of the year while Corin Messer, of the Daily Echo, Bournemouth, took the prize for young photographer of the year.
Winner of the best local newspaper week initiative was the South Wales Echo, which also took the award for best design and layout.
