Campey: took over last April
Yorkshire Post editor Rachael Campey met NUJ officials on Wednesday to talk about the issues that prompted a chapel vote of no confidence in her.
A former deputy news editor of The Times, Campey took over as editor at the Post last April.
Staff are unhappy about the treatment of women’s editor Jill Armstrong, who is understood to have been told her role is being scrapped.
They passed a motion at a union meeting last week that expressed no confidence and mentioned the possibility of a strike.
NUJ chapel officers were due to meet Campey on Wednesday afternoon with a representative from the newspaper’s human resources department.
A chapel source said: “From all our points of view we want an assurance that Jill Armstrong is not going to lose her job. We were promised by the editor and the company that there would be no job losses and we expect those promises to be honest.
“Chapel officers are planning to raise issues that have concerned members over the months since Rachael Campey was appointed about the way the paper’s being run. It’s not an objection to change in principle, but there’s concern over the way these changes are being introduced.”
Johnston Press chief executive Tim Bowdler said: “It’s an internal matter.
Steps are being taken to address the issues. The Yorkshire Post as a newspaper is going very well and there’s been real progress under Rachael Campey’s editorship.”
