The Bristol Evening Post has been praised for its role in bringing a nightclub bouncer to justice.
Gillian Cockwell contacted police after reading a Post report of the trial of bouncer Martin White which said no witnesses had backed up claims by trainee solicitor David Lowe that White had deliberately struck him in the face with a walkie-talkie radio – leaving him blind in one eye.
The case was stopped and Cockwell gave evidence at a retrial.
White was convicted of causing grievous bodily harm and is awaiting sentence.
Lowe said: “Full credit to the Evening Post. Without the paper, this witness may not have come forward.”
