By Press Gazette

UK photographers performed well in the fourth Commonwealth Photographic Awards, celebrating the best amateur and professional photography across the Commonwealth.

Organised jointly by the Commonwealth Press Union and the Commonwealth Broadcasting Association, the annual awards had been given the theme “Celebration”.

The overall winner, who won £2,000, was John Lehmann, a staffer with the Toronto Globe and Mail. UK freelance photojournalist Paul Howell won the Europe category. Three other photographers in the Europe category, all from the UK, were highly commended: Doug Moody of the Teesside Evening Gazette and freelances John Angerson and Royston E Naylor.

The theme for the 2004 awards is “Youth”. Contact cpu@cpu.org.uk for more.
