The editor of Newcastle daily The Journal abruptly resigned this week amid rumours he had been concerned about company cost-cutting.
Ged Henderson has been with the Trinity Mirror-owned title for three years, during which time it was named North-East Newspaper of the Year.
A spokesman for the Newcastle Chronicle and Journal said he did not know whether Henderson had another job to go to. “Ged Henderson has resigned as editor of The Journal; the company is currently in discussions with Ged over his departure so we can say no more at this stage, other than that this is an amicable parting of the ways.”
Trinity Mirror announced plans to shed 550 jobs across the company in August.
Press Gazette asked Henderson if cost-cutting had prompted his resignation and he declined to offer any comment. Journal deputy editor Graham Pratt has become acting editor.
The Journal is the smaller of Trinity Mirror’s two Newcastle dailies and in the January to June 2003 ABCs recorded a circulation of 45,316. The other is the Evening Chronicle, with an ABC circulation of 96,831.
