Our report last week comparing the circulations of Scotland on Sunday and the Sunday Herald was based on figures carried in the Sunday Herald. Scotland on Sunday says they are erroneous figures that use unfair comparisons and are part of a propaganda war being waged against the paper by the Sunday Herald. Press Gazette regrets publishing the story and apologises to Scotland on Sunday.
As Press Gazette reported in its national ABC story last week, Scotland on Sunday’s audited ABC sale for July – its lowest sales month of the year – was 76,692, of which 75,020 were actively purchased. According to ABC, Scotland on Sunday is the only national Sunday newspaper in the UK (apart from The Business) to have increased its six-monthly average sale year-on-year: a rise of 0.52 per cent.
The claim that sales of the Sunday Herald had increased yearonyear in July to 54,430 was based on the paper’s unaudited figures because the Sunday Herald is a regional paper audited every six months and cannot be compared to Scotland on Sunday sales audited every month.
The most recent ABC sales figure for the Sunday Herald, July to December 2002, is 58,708 of which 55,316 were actively purchased.
