The Tribune, Nassau, has increased its sales by 60 per cent in five years.
John Marquis left Packet News-papers, where he was editor, in 1999 to become managing editor of The Tribune, one of two morning papers in the Bahamas. At 59, he has spent 42 years in papers and magazines.
The Tribune switched from being an evening to a morning paper in 1998 and the move marked the start of a ferocious circulation war with the 160-year-old Nassau Guardian.
“I’m well chuffed by the paper’s performance, which has had to overcome a massive psychological hurdle, having for years been branded unjustly as a ‘white elitist paper’ in a community which is 85 per cent black,” he said.
A five-section, full-colour broadsheet, which celebrates its centenary in November, The Tribune is still family owned. Marquis is responsible for the day-to-day running of the paper and in charge of the editorial staff, which includes three other Brits – business editor, Neil Hartnell, main section editor, Jason Donald and sports editor, Nuala Naughton.
