BBC Radio Derby is to search for an Amateur Sports Reporter of the Year for the Derbyshire and east Staffordshire area as part of the corporation’s campaign to find and encourage new talent.
The winner will get the chance to join the BBC Radio Derby sports team on a match day alongside the station’s Derby FC commentator, Ross Fletcher. He or she will summarise the game live on BBC Radio Derby and then attend the post-match press conference with the manager and players. The report will be broadcast on BBC Radio Derby and appear on the BBC’s website for Derbyshire.
Gary Andrews, BBC Radio Derby’s assistant editor, said the competition was open to anyone.
“It doesn’t matter how old you are or which football team you support, but you must not have been paid for work as a sports reporter before.”

The BBC will also be touring around some of the area’s football clubs: Monday, 14 April: Burton Albion – Eton Park, 10am to 3pm; Tuesday, 15 April: Derby County – Pride Park, outside the Baseball Bar, 10am to 3pm; Wednesday, 16 April: Ilkeston Town – New Manor Ground, 10am to 3pm.
Entries should be sent on audio cassette or mini-disc with three minutes of commentary on any sporting event plus a 60 second summary. The closing date is Monday, 9 June.
