The BBC turned detective last week, after it contributed to solving the mystery of an unidentified body found by police on the Isle of Skye in October 2001.
An artist’s impression drawn from forensic evidence and broadcast on local television had proved futile.
Police also tried to identify the body using dental records and made an appeal through the British Dental Journal for information, but failed to turn up any leads.
But a final appeal by Northern Constabulary police placed on BBC Ceefax was fortunately seen by a woman whose father had been missing on the island since August 2001.
The police were preparing to bury the body of the middle-aged man last week, when they where contacted by the woman, who had realised the details corresponded to those of her father, insurance underwriter Christopher Gray from Crowborough in East Sussex.
Gray had not seen her father for some years following his separation from her mother, but knew he had been traced to Skye 15 months ago. Gray’s body was discovered in a makeshift shelter near Sleat.
