In the biggest single transaction of 2002 in the Irish media market, Scottish newspaper group Dunfermline Press has acquired the Meath Chronicle group and its contract printing operation for E30.5m (£20m).
The Chronicle was established in 1897 and the company prints 600,000 copies of the Daily Mirror, Sunday Mirror and the Sunday People each week. It is understood Chronicle editor Ken Davis will remain in his job.
Circulation of the Chronicle is 17,000 a week. Dunfermline’s entry into Ireland follows Scottish Radio Holdings, which now has five regional titles and the national radio station Today FM.
