Senior political journalists launch new daily email called The Spoon

Four senior political journalist today launched a new daily briefing email called The Spoon.

The free email aims to break down the top stories of the day in a digestible, easy to read format with a focus on accuracy and balance – linking to various news websites.

The spoon is written and created by:

  • Former political editor of the Independent on Sunday Jane Merrick
  • Former BBC presenter Bobby Friedman
  • Former Economist reporter Martha Gill
  • And GQ political correspondent Rupert Myers.

In a statement they said: “There are more news sources than ever before. But we have often found ourselves updating our friends on the news, or whatsapping them just before a job interview (quick, I have 5 minutes, what are the 3 stories I need to know about today?).

“We think this is because while some news sources are reliable and trusted, others have become less so. When you wake up in the morning and check Twitter or Facebook, how can you tell you are getting the full picture? How can you tell what is real and what is fake?

“Which are the stories that matter, and which are being driven by someone with an agenda? It can take a while to sift through the noise and chatter to get to the heart of what you really need to know.

“Every weekday morning before you wake up, the Spoon will deliver the news to your inbox: easy to read, lively, impartial, independent and accurate.

“The Spoon will contain all the important stuff your boss and your annoying friend who somehow has time to read all the papers might try to talk to you about.

“It will keep you on top of the General Election without you having to wade through long political mid-morning emails. It will tell you what Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un have been up to while you were sleeping without depressing you too much.

“And it will keep you up to date on the things that you should know but are too busy to find out – like when Homeland’s back on TV or when Hamilton tickets are going on sale.”

The plan is for it to be funded by advertising.
