£75,000 raised for hospital

By Press Gazette

Readers of TheWokingham Times have helped to raise £75,000 in just a year to start the building of an extension to the town’s hospital.

The campaign was launched to mark the weekly newspaper’s centenary celebrations.

The five-edition broadsheet enlisted the help of local celebrity Uri Geller to be patron of the appeal.

He put on a special one-man show fundraiser and also donated £10,000 to the cause.

Wokingham Times staff also raised money by organising their own events.

Editor Keith Redbourn said: “This is another example of how local papers can make a real difference to the communities they serve.”
