Published in the face of official denials, the story revealed that the British government was effectively negotiating with the IRA to secure a peace deal.

Eamonn Mallie was political editor of Downtown Radio and one of the journalists at the centre of the scoop. It led to Secretary of State for Northern Ireland Sir Patrick Mayhew offering to resign.
