36. British journalism’s greatest ever scoops: Attorney General’s Legal Advice on the case for war (Channel 4 News, Gary Gibbon, Jon Snow, 2005)

Eight days before voters went to the polls in the 2005 General Election, Channel 4 News obtained the summary of then Attorney General’s Lord Goldsmith’s legal advice to Prime Minister Tony Blair two weeks before the start of the war against Iraq in 2003.

It showed that – at that stage – the Attorney General was equivocal about the legal justification for war, and listed many caveats and warnings about the risk of illegality.
