PCC appoints first communications director

By Emma Slawinski

The Press Complaints Commission has appointed former News International PR man Jonathan Collett as its first ever director of communications.

Collett is currently head of communications for the Advertising Association.

He’ll switch from the advertising industry regulator on 23 November to join his former boss at the press watchdog.

Baroness Buscombe, chairman of the PCC, was chief executive of the Advertising Association before replacing Sir Christopher Meyer in March as she took up her post.

Before joining the Advertising Association, Collett was public affairs manager at News International. He also worked as press spokesman for Michael Howard when he was leader of the Conservative Party.

Buscombe said Collett’s appointment was part of a ‘concerted strategy’ to increase the profile of, and build trust in, the PCC.

In his new role, which is being funded from the existing PCC budget, Collett will develop and oversee a strategy to promote the work of the PCC and the press regulatory system to the public.
