Eight compulsory job losses at Newsquest Glasgow titles

By Gavriel Hollander

Glasgow’s Herald & Times Group will make eight compulsory redundancies as part of 17 total job cuts to its production roster.

The job losses will affect Newsquest titles The Herald, the Sunday Herald and Evening Times as the papers bring in a new production system.

The National Union of Journalists has balloted for strike action with the result expected this time next week.

A tweet from NUJ Scotland following the announcement yesterday warned that action was “inevitable”.

Paul Holleran, the NUJ’s Scottish organiser, said the union would challenge the redundancies in the courts after claiming those affected should be entitled to more than statutory redundancy terms.

He added that a similar process that the union concluded recently with Johnston Press title The Scotsman resulted in all redundancies being voluntary.

“Newsquest said they would like to go down that route too but refused to play ball,” he said. “It’s crazy that they’re doing this now as it will bring industrial action and there will be chaos.”

The Herald & Times Group could not be reached for comment.
