Chris Styles named new editor of Evening Gazette

By Press Gazette

Trinity Mirror has announced that NCJ Media executive editor Chris Styles has been appointed the new editor of the Evening Gazette in Middlesbrough.

Styles was a former news editor at the Gazette before moving to Newcastle in 2002 and replaces Darren Thwaites, who was named as the new editor of the Newcastle Evening Chronicle in August.

After Thwaites left for Newcastle Peter Montellier, a former editor of the Sunday Sun in Newcastle, was appointed interim editor of the Gazette.

Styles, who began his career at his home town paper the Oldham Evening Chronicle, said: ‘I am delighted and privileged to have been given the opportunity to edit the Evening Gazette and look forward to helping develop such a trusted brand.

‘I would like to thank my colleagues and friends in Newcastle for all the help they have given me over the past nine years.”

Regional managing director for the Gazette Media Company and NCJ Media Bob Cuffe said: ‘Chris has an outstanding CV, and fully deserves this exciting opportunity.

‘He takes over with the Evening Gazette in fine shape, with a strong newspaper sales performance, a growing digital audience and an excellent team to support him.’

Styles take up his new role early in the New Year.
