Archant hatches magazine to cash in on chicken craze

By Dominic Ponsford

Regional media group Archant has hatched a plan to cash-in on the current craze for hen-keeping by launching new monthly magazine Your Chickens.

The first preview issue is to be distributed free with sister title Country Smallholding which is available from tomorrow.

Archant South West, which is publishing the title, believes there is a potential audience amongst the 500,000 Britons who keep hens their back gardens.

It said in a statement: ‘We have assembled some of Britain’s leading poultry experts to write for the magazine, and they will be sharing their expertise with readers every month.

‘There will be fascinating features, articles packed full of information, plenty of tips and advice, a special club for children, competitions, news, quirky stories, products, and lots more.”

Celebrities and their chickens, the most beautiful breeds and advice on keeping your birds healthy will all be covered in the new title, the publisher said.

Anna Atkinson, publisher of the magazine, said: “Hens are hot, and we believe Your Chickens will be a big hit. More and more families are buying birds. It seems hard economic times are partly driving the trend – people realise they can save money on eggs by having their own hens.

“Hens are also part of the good life, along with growing your own veg. They are also fun and easy to keep as pets, so ideal for the family with young children.”
