The Sun is planning to open a new Manchester HQ eight years after closing its base in the city, according to sources at the paper.
Last week Press Gazette reported on the how the paper was recruiting four new reporters and two photographers in the North.
Several sources have since confirmed that they are expected to be based in a new office in Manchester – the first time the paper has had a base in the city since 2004.
A number of journalists are understood to have already been taken on but no former News of the World staff are expected to be rehired.
Eight years ago then Sun editor Rebekah Brooks announced the closure of its Manchester office with the loss of up to 10 jobs.
Several other jobs were lost in the North when publishers News International decided to centralise its editorial team at its headquarters in Wapping.
At the time the company said the changes were aimed at “streamlining and co-ordinating the newsgathering operation under one newsdesk in Wapping”.
The move comes as the North West is enjoying a media boom with the opening of Media City in Salford which has become the base for much of the BBC’s operations.
The Sun declined to comment.
