The Sun today claimed it had been hit with a privacy injunction banning it from running a story about Karen Matthews, the mother jailed for kidnapping her daughter in 2009.
A High Court hearing in Leeds ban publication of the article even though it had been ‘completely substantiated and there were no complaints about accuracy,’the newspaper claimed.
The Sun also said it had been ‘commended’by the judge in the case for approaching authorities in advance of publication, and that the story was in the public interest.
A report in today’s paper said lawyers for Matthews ‘urged the judge to impose the gag, even though they did not contest the truth of our proposed report”.
Matthews was jailed in 2009 after faking the kidnap of her daughter Shannon, who was missing for 24 days before being discovered at the home Michael Donovan, the uncle of Matthew’s partner Craig Meehan.
The Sun reported that Matthews is expected to be freed next year.
