The Sun has apologised to the judge presiding over the trial in which two men deny the murder of student Stephen Lawrence for breaching a reporting restriction order in the case.
The issue was raised on Monday. Details cannot be given because of an order under section 4 (2) of the Contempt of Court Act made by the trial judge, Mr Justice Treacy.
But the judge has allowed reporting of the facts that The Sun admitted that its Saturday edition breached a reporting restriction order under the Contempt of Court Act 1981, and had apologised, and that he had decided that in the circumstances that no further action would be taken.
The judge also allowed reporting of the fact that he had described the position as an “unprofessional blunder”.
