Stefano Hatfield, former editor of now defunct freesheet the London Paper, has been appointed as an executive editor of The Independent with special responsibility for i – its new 20p spin-off.
In his new role – which starts on Monday – Hatfield will report directly to Simon Kelner, editor-in-chief of The Independent and i.
Kelner said: “Stefano will be responsible for i, and his energy and experience will be vital in building on what has been a tremendously successful launch.”
Hatfield joins The Independent from News International where he was director of ventures at The Times, reporting to editor James Harding.
Prior to that appointment, Hatfield edited News International’s freesheet London Paper from launch in August, 2006 until it closed in September last year. He was also previously editor of the trade magazine Campaign and New York’s Metro freesheet.
Hatfield said: “The opportunity to join Simon Kelner and his talented team on this imaginative and intelligent launch is exciting and unmissable. i really is a paper for today, marrying quality and convenience, and I can’t wait to get started.”
