Roger Alton, editor of The Observer, and BBC Newsnight anchor Gavin Esler are to advise tutors on a new journalism course.
The pair will sit on a panel of advisors to the University if Kent’s new degree course in journalism. Also on the panel is Phil Harding, former editor of BBC’s Today programme and a founder of BBC Five Live, and Simon Irwin, editorial director of the Kent Messenger Group.
Alton leaves the Observer at the end of this year.
The course, which begins in September 2008 and will be based at the university’s Medway campus, aims to combine ‘traditional print media’skills with training in digital media and broadcast journalism.
The University’s professor of journalism, Tim Luckhurst, said: ‘We will be teaching students all about 21st century journalism – making sure they have the intellectual skills, and the multimedia know-how, to embark on successful careers in the fast-changing news industry.
‘It’s my aim that the University of Kent will lead the field in the teaching of modern-day journalism. We want to make sure that every student relishes the prospect of learning their craft here at Medway.”
