Oxford University college boycotts The Sun in Page Three protest

By William Turvill

An Oxford University college Junior Common Room has cancelled its subscription to The Sun in protest against topless models on Page Three.

It joins the London School of Economics, Manchester Metropolitan, Sheffield and Edinburgh university unions in banning the sale of the newspaper – each citing the same reason, according to campaign group No More Page Three.

The motion was forwarded in a meeting attended by more than 120 St Edmund Hall JCR members (out of around 420). There were 21 abstentions and 11 votes against the motion.

The college has now cancelled its subscription to three daily copies of The Sun.

Harry Hodges, the associate editor of The Tab student newspaper in Oxford, reported the proposer, Madi Maxwell-Libby, saying:

“We get that people think this is hysterical or futile. Page Three was set up in the 1970s – a period which didn’t value equality. I don’t think anyone disagrees that we’re no longer down with the values of Page Three.”
