Fighting for quality news media in the digital age.

One World Media Awards 2011: full list of winners

By Maria Buckley

Channel 4’s Lindsey Hilsum was named Journalist of the Year at the One World Media Awards 2011 in London yesterday.

Hilsum triumphed over an all-female line up, with judges describing her reporting from Gaza, Afghanistan, Iraq and the Congo as “story-telling at its best… this was a master class in provocative journalism.”

The Press Award was won by Jonathan Steele for his Guardian G2 feature ‘Real Life Inside Helmand’, which reported on the UK’s aid and development work in Afghanistan.

The Millennium Development Goals award went to the Guardian’s Global Development website, which judges described as a “dynamic, interactive site featuring high quality multi-media content”.

The Radio Award was given to BBC World Service for ‘India’s Microcredit Meltdown’, an exploration of the crisis hitting India’s microcredit industry, and a special award was picked up by ShujaazFM, a “cutting-edge multi-media project” in Kenya which has reached 15 million young people within 6 months of its launch.

The New Media Award went to the National Film Board of Canada for ‘Highrise – Out My Window’, a feature-length web documentary on urban living.

The awards – aimed at recognising excellence in media coverage of the developing world – were presented by Jon Snow, with Minister of State for International Development, Alan Duncan, as guest speaker.
