Telegraph Media Group has appointed Observer journalist Gaby Wood as its new head of books – overseeing literature coverage in the Telegraph’s Saturday Review Section and across the daily paper.
Wood joins from the Guardian News & Media Sunday paper where she has taken on various roles over the past eight years, including arts editor, deputy literary editor and most recently, New York correspondent.
She will take over from Brian MacArthur who is retiring.
Wood becomes the most recent female journalists to leave the paper following the departure in December of Louise France, former deputy editor of Observer Woman and Observer Food Monthly magazines, for the Times.
In September it emerged that political editor Gaby Hinsliff was to leave the paper after nine years service.
That departure was ahead of an announcement in November where GNM told its staff that it planned to cut more than 100 employees as part of further cost saving measures aimed at reducing its “unsustainable” losses of more than £100,000 per day.
Also in November, GNM said that three of The Observer’s rotating monthly magazine supplements would be dropped as part of a wholesale revamp.
Observer Sport, Woman and Music Monthly will disappear when it is relaunched next month but Observer Food Monthly will be retained.
Cuts to the paper will also see it lose business and cash supplements, which will instead be included in the main news section.
The Escape supplement will also be dropped and instead included in a new travel section of Observer magazine.
