Former Labour MP Adam Ingram is heading for a High Court battle with publishers Times Newspapers over a story in the Sunday Times.
Ingram, 65, is demanding libel damages of more than £300,000 over a story headlined: ‘MP’s £100,000 gift to Gaddafi’s son’, which he claims was defamatory.
The former MP for East Kilbride, Strathaven and Lesmahagow is also seeking an injunction banning repetition of the allegations about him.
Ingram, who used to be a trade union official, represented his constituency in Glasgow from 1987 until 2010 when he stood down.
He was the Armed Forces Minister at the Ministry of Defence in 2001 and nine years later, at a public inquiry into the beating to death of Baba Mousa in custody, admitted he had misled MPs over British soldiers’ hooding of Iraqi prisoners.
He had claimed that prisoners were only hooded when they were being transported but had been informed that Baba Mousa had been hooded for almost 24 of the 36 hours he was held in custody.
Ingram has instructed Andrew Stephenson of law firm Carter-Ruck to act for him.
