News Corp claims it has reached a settlement with Mail Online over alleged breach of copyright in Australia.
In June, the company spoke out against the Associated Newspapers website – which moved Down Under earlier this year – alleging it had begun “lifting substantial slabs of original content from a large number of articles”.
The Australian, which is a News Corp newspaper, reports that the company has “reserved the right to take further action if the publisher steals stories and pictures again”.
The company denied any suggestion that the agreement had come out “in the Mail Online’s favour” after publisher Martin Clarke was quoted in the Financial Times as saying it was resolved “very much to my satisfaction”.
But a News Corp insider told The Australian that the suggestion it had backed down was “missing the point entirely”, adding: “All we ever wanted was for them to stop ripping us off, which has happened.”
And the paper reports that News Corp will be keeping a “vigilant eye” out for future copyright breaches with a view to taking action.
