Irish journalist facing more than 50 child sex charges following three-year investigation

A top Irish journalist is expected to appear in court next week in connection allegations that he sexually abused a 14-year-old girl.

The Irish Sun reports that the journalist suffered a heart attack after he was exposed and required other medical treatment before gardai could question him fully.

The man was arrested in September 2012 following an extensive stay in a psychiatric hospital in Dublin.

The Director of Public Prosecutions has decided to levy more than 50 charges against the man including sexual assault, defilement of a child and exploitation of a minor.

Gardai investigated complaints that the man had engaged in a prolonged sexual relationship with the young girl for an extended period.

Detectives investigating the allegations have seized mobile phones and computers and subjected them to a forensic examination.

The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, has published several very popular sports books.
