The i joins other Independent titles and leaves Ireland

By William Turvill

The i newspaper is to stop being distributed in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland from next week because it no longer makes "economic sense".

It joins sister titles The Independent and Independent on Sunday, which were withdrawn from the island this time last year.

Press Gazette understands the paper will not be distributed in newsagents from 3 August.

An email to newsagents in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland said: "Printing and distributing so few printed copies now no longer makes economic sense, especially while in parallel the web and iPad editions have become increasingly more popular.

"Independent Print Limited remains committed to its print titles in the UK and will continue to support and invest in The Independent, The Independent on Sunday and i."

According to ABC figures, the i was the only newspaper to put on sales year on year in June, with an average circulation of 303,009, up 1.16 per cent year on year. Sister titles The Independent and Independent on Sunday, meanwhile, recorded circulations of 73,060 (down 18.82 per cent year on year) and 111,986 (down 8.65 per cent year on year) respectively.
