The i will increase its cover price to 30p from next Monday, the newspaper’s editor Oliver Duff has confirmed.
The paper, which had an ABC figure of 298,266 in January 2014, has been 20p since its launch in October 2010.
Duff used his daily letter to the readers yesterday to explain the reason behind the 50 percent price hike.
“Only a fool takes readers for granted… We know this won't be popular – who wants to pay more for anything? – but we hope that it is not a prohibitive increase for you, and that you can support us in this move."
"i has prospered editorially… but it has become essential for us, after such a long freeze, to raise our cover price to meet overheads and further invest in our journalism."
Readers will be able to avoid the price hike if they take out a subscription available for £45 per year or £25 for six months.
