Britain’s youngest national newspaper the i celebrated its second birthday on Friday.
Launched on 26 October 2010, the i’s latest ABC circulation figure was 282,995 – up 112 per cent compared with its launch figure of 133,472.
The paper now has a bigger circulation than its sister title The Independent (81,254) and rival titles The Guardian (204,937).
Since its launch, the title has been guest edited by Elton John, launched a Saturday edition in May 2011, and was named Newspaper of the Year at the National Newspaper Awards earlier this year.
Executive editor Stefano Hatfield said: “Since launching, i's audience has grown massively, especially impressive in the last few months which has seen the decline in growth of other quality UK newspapers.
“As we celebrate our second birthday, we look forward to another year in which we will continue to provide quality journalism to our growing audience in the concise and easy to read format that readers love.”
Evgeny Lebedev, owner and chairman of the i, Independent and London Evening Standard, said: “We are very proud to have achieved so much in such a short time.
“The reception and sustained success of the paper shows that quality print journalism is far from dead.
“We look forward to building on our recent successes and further increasing our readership of i.”
