Former News of the World editor Barry Askew has died aged 75.
Askew was editor of the Matlock Mercury at the age of 21 and went on to edit the Sheffield Morning Telegraph and Sheffield Star before, at the age of 32, starting a 13-year stint as editor of the Lancashire Evening Post in Preston. He spent eight months as editor of the News of the World in 1981.
During his time at the LEP Askew won awards including campaigning journalist of the year and journalist of the year.
After leaving the News of the World he returned to Lancashire and left the media as a result of illness.
In 2006 he was one of 40 journalists to enter the Press Gazette Regional Press Hall of Fame – celebrating the 40 greatest regional press journalists of the modern era (since the launch of Press Gazette in 1965).
