Fighting for quality news media in the digital age.

Dinsmore says that Page Three is one of the ‘pillars of the paper’ and that topless pics will stay in The Sun

By Gavriel Hollander

New Sun editor David Dinsmore has called campaigners demanding that the paper axe the use of topless models on Page Three “a vocal minority”.

In an exclusive interview with Press Gazette, Dinsmore said Page Three was “one of the pillars of the paper” and re-iterated his desire to keep it.

He said: “I am aware of people who don’t like it, but I know they are a vocal minority, and among our readership they are a tiny minority. The vast majority either love it or are ambivalent.

“I make no apology for saying that I am in the business of selling newspapers. It is part of the mix of Britain’s biggest selling newspaper and until the readers tell me they don’t want it, it’s here to stay.”

More than 100,000 people have signed a petition urging The Sun to take "bare boobs" out of the paper. The Girl Guides, Unison and the National Association of Head Teachers are among the groups backing the No More Page Three campaign.

Dinsmore said he was “not sure” whether the campaign group had asked for a meeting with him, though he added he was happy to sit down with them to discuss the issue.
After taking over the Sun editorship he received an email from campaigner Sian Life, calling on him to end “the objectification of women”. He replied that he would “take your comments on board”.
