The British Association of Journalists called off strike action planned for the weekend on Mirror Group Newspapers’ three London-based titles.
Union members on The People, the Daily Mirror and the Sunday Mirror decided to cancel a series of two-hour walkouts on the three papers during a meeting on the editorial floor at MGN on Friday.
The cancellation of stoppages set for last Friday and Saturday comes after a similar cancellation of strike action last weekend and the previous weekend.
The BAJ originally proposed a series of two-hour stoppages to run on three consecutive weekends, culminating on Saturday, 4 September, in protest at planned job cuts by the publisher and at the outsourcing of editorial work to the Press Association.
Representatives from the union are due to meet members of MGN management to discuss staff redundancies on Wednesday.
The strike process was set in motion when Trinity Mirror announced plans in June to cut around 200 editorial jobs across its three London-based national newspapers.
Initially around 60 casuals were expected to be dropped with the remaining 140 cuts coming from the staff journalists – reducing the total editorial workforce (including casuals) from its current level of 554.
Press Gazette revealed last week that the number of redundancies is now understood to be lower than originally feared.
Press Gazette understands that that fewer than a hundred staff are expected to be made redundant with compulsory redundancies likely to total 25 following theend today of the consultation period on job cuts.
