Tom Dunmore steps down from Stuff

By Oliver Luft

Stuff magazine editor-in-chief Tom Dunmore is to step down after ten years with the popular gadgets magazine.

Publisher Haymarket has yet to select a replacement for Dunmore, who will relinquish duties as editor-in-chief and brand director from 6 August to become an editorial consultant.

Haymarket Consumer Media’s strategy and planning director Bob McDowell is set to take interim control of publishing duties at Stuff, while editorial director Mark Payton is expected to assume editorial duties.

In addition to establishing his own consultancy, called Flying Leaf, Dunmore will continue to contribute to the magazine and its website, Stuff.tv, in a new part-time role as consulting editor.

Dunmore said: “I felt time was right for me to move on and look at other opportunities. I want to work as creatively as possible and in number of different ways. I don’t want to be stuck doing just one thing. I have ambitions to lots of things, particularly in digital areas.”

Dunmore joined Haymarket more than a decade ago, first working as a sub-editor on Stuff before rising to become editor. He also launched the short-lived magazine title Rip and Burn in 2004 before returning to Stuff as editor-in-chief the following year.

During his tenure the magazine has become one of the most read international mens titles, with 28 international editions.

In other moves at the title, commissioning editor Will Findlater has been promoted to deputy to support editor Fraser Macdonald, while Mic Wright has rejoined the magazine’s website from Q magazine as its news editor.
