Fighting for quality news media in the digital age.

Talksport online magazine won’t ape Monkey

By Rachael Gallagher

Talksport’s new online-only digital magazine will be ‘completely different’to Monkey, despite being headed up by the former publisher of the Dennis’ digital lads magazine James Mallinson.

Bill Borrows, editor of the digital brand extension for the speech radio station, said that the only thing they have in common is that they’re delivered to the reader’s inbox. ‘It’s totally and utterly dissimilar. I’ve brought in a team of journalists, as opposed to people who just sit on the internet all day.”

Borrows, who is also the sports editor at Esquire, will be joined by Nuts sport editor Gershon Portnoi as his deputy and Tom Bailey from Daily Mail’s Night and Day magazine, as associate editor, with responsibility for entertainment, gadgets and fashion. The art director is former Arena and FHM man, Duncan Stafford, and Nui Patuaka of Hearst Digital will be joining as flash designer.

Borrows said that working on the digital title has opened his eyes. ‘When I pick up a magazine now, unless it’s exceptional like Esquire, I think it looks stale. I have to think in 3D. I have to think of the video content, the audio content, the word content, the balance – it’s a new way of thinking.”
