Richard Desmond to launch new TV listings magazine

By Andrew Pugh

Richard Desmond’s Northern & Shell is launching a new magazine in the highly competitive TV listing sector.

TV Pick will be priced at 40p – 5p less than what N&S calls its “nearest rival” TV Choice, which according to figures released yesterday is the UK’s best-selling paid-for magazine.

N&S will also be up against the likes of What’s on TV and Radio Times – the second and third best-selling titles.

The company said TV Pick will give readers a free ticket for Desmond’s Health Lottery with the launch edition

The magazine will be heavily promoted across Desmond’s newspapers – the Star and Express titles – and Channel 5.

In a statement released this morning the company said: “Additionally, in order to make the launch even more compelling, for a period of 6 weeks Northern & Shell will give the full cover price of each magazine back to the trade sector as a huge incentive to our retail and wholesale partners. We will also secure fantastic displays in all our retail outlets across the country.”

Paul Ashford, Northern & Shell’s group editorial director, said: “The launch of TV Pick underlines our commitment to the magazine sector and our confidence that we can grow market share by being smart and leveraging our unique promotional resources and relationships. We are very excited about being able to offer readers the best–priced TV listings title in the market.

“Northern & Shell’s many years publishing newspapers and celebrity magazines has given us a unique insight into the different age groups and social demographics that make up the core TV viewing audience. Through Northern &Shell’s ownership of Channel 5, we have a far greater understanding of what is required from a listings title than any other publisher.

“TV Pick will have clear, easy-to-read-listings, seven-day programme information, TV news and gossip, in-depth coverage of all the soaps, amazing access to the hottest TV stars, letters, diet tips, horoscopes and puzzles.”

It is not yet known how many editorial staff will work on the paper or who is editing TV Pick.
