PPA appoints Barry McIlheney as new chief exec

By Oliver Luft

Magazine trade body, the PPA, has appointed former Emap executive Barry McIlheney as its new chief executive.

He will succeed Jonathan Shephard, who left the organisation in September after little over a year in the job, when he takes up his post at the start of February.

McIlheney, originally from Belfast, has worked in consumer publishing for 25 years, starting his career as editor of Smash Hits in the late ’80s.

He went on to become editor of Empire then and managing director of Emap Metro and chief executive of Emap Elan, responsible for brands Q, The Face, and Elle.

He also launched FHM in France and the men’s weekly Zoo in the UK and Australia.

After 21 years at Emap he joined Sport Newspapers in 2008 for its failed bid to relaunch the Sport titles as “newszines”.

A further change at the organisation will see Charles Reed, managing director of William Reed Business Media, succeed Peter Phippen, managing director of BBC Magazines, as chairman of the PPA on 1 February.
