Magazine editors to draw up ‘airbrushing’ code

By Paul McNally

A group of rival magazine editors have agreed to meet to discuss airbrushing in magazines, with the possibility of drawing up a voluntary code of practice on airbrushing and “size zero” models.

The Periodical Publishers Association will act as an arbiter for the discussions, which will also be attended by representatives from the British Fashion Council.

The round-table discussions follow the publication last autumn of a report by Baroness Kingsmill on models’ health, which recommended that the media manipulation of images be subject to a strict code of practice.

The PPA said a broad cross-section of magazine editors had agreed to attend, but a date for the talks had yet to be confirmed.

PPA director of legal and public affairs, Kerry Neilson, said: “Using digital technology to adjust images is a technique widely used across all media.

“As this is a complex issue and there is no pre-determined consensus across the industry, we are currently canvassing views.

“We look forward to developing discussions with both the British Fashion Council as well as editors within the magazine sector.”
