Former Emap boss paves the path to grape-ness

By Axegrinder

Journos at Emap – now rebranded as the Top Right Group – may have occasionally wondered what happened to erstwhile chief executive David Gilbertson in the two years since he left.

Well, Axegrinder can reveal that Gilbertson, whose weekly emails always perked up the troops on a Friday afternoon, has picked up the typewriter again.

He has written a business self-help book, called ‘Wine Bar Theory’. The blurb publicising the tome says it contains “a theory that can pave your road to success”.

Inspiring stuff. And the man himself should know a thing or two about success, given he managed to walk away with a £2.4m pay-off after his three years at the helm of the group from 2008 to 2011.

The contractual settlement was four times his £600,000 annual salary and came despite the fact that Emap was then (and still is) miles away from recouping the £1.1bn The Guardian/Apax paid for it in 2007. Success, indeed. Of a sort.
