Former Economist Group chief executive Helen Alexander CBE will be presented the Marcus Morris Award for her contribution to magazine publishing at a lunch today in central London.
The award recognises “significant and longstanding” contribution to the magazine publishing industry in the UK – in honour of the late Morris, who launched Cosmopolitan and Company and died in 1989.
Alexander held the chief executive role at the Economist Group from 1997 until July this year. She saw the publication’s circulation increase by almost 50 per cent and the company’s operating profit rise by 75 per cent. She also led the magazine’s expansion overseas.
Alexander was awarded a CBE in 2004 In recognition of her services to publishing, and chaired the PPA from October 2006 to July 2008.
The PPA said that Alexander’s professionalism and commitment ‘ensured that PPA remained a strong and highly successful trade association for consumer, customer and business media providers which represented and protected the interests of its members”.
Natmag chief executive and PPA board member Duncan Edwards will be presenting the award to Alexander at the Marcus Morris lunch in London this afternoon.
He said: ‘Helen Alexander represents and exemplifies the best in magazine publishing. Throughout her outstanding career, she has followed in the footsteps of Marcus Morris by demonstrating extraordinary leadership, skill and understanding of the magazine publishing sector.”
Alexander left the Economist Group in July to become an adviser to private equity group Bain Capital – which is currently one of the two parties left in the running for Reed Elsevier’s business publishing arm, Reed Business Information.
