Fighting for quality news media in the digital age.

Ex-CNET boss Tom Bureau joins Magicalia as chief exec

By Paul McNally

Consumer magazine group Magicalia is looking to grow its digital activity with the appointment of former CNET UK managing director Tom Bureau as its new chief executive.

Bureau, who left online publisher CNET in 2007 after five years in charge of its UK division, has been tasked with reorganising Magicalia’s existing portfolio and launching new websites.

Magicalia is a special interest and hobby magazine publisher, with titles including Model Engineer and Gardens Monthly.

The group said it was looking to build more cross-platform portals, similar to recent launch ThinkBaby.co.uk – which brings together content from its three parenting titles, Junior, Practical Parenting and Pregnancy, Baby & You.

In his new role, Bureau is expected to hire a number of new online publishing specialists to help grow the business. His first appointment is Duncan Tickell, the former group publishing director at Incisive Media, described by Bureau as a cross-media specialist.

The publisher’s expansion is being backed by Magicalia’s investors, the private equity group Exponent. Magicalia’s founders, Jeremy Tapp and Adam Laird, will stay at the company in a consulting role, both as non-executive directors.

Bureau’s 15-year media career includes a number of launches, from Business & Technology magazine in 1993 to B2B IT website Silicon.com in 1998.
