One year after launching on the iPad the British Journal of Photography has as many subscribers as it does in print.
The print edition has a monthly sale of 8,000, of which 4,000 are subscribers. Now, one year on, an equivalent number of people have signed up for six-month or year-long subscriptions to the quarterly bespoke iPad edition – according to publisher Incisive Media.
They say the app shell, which includes a certain amount of free content, has been downloaded nearly 200,000 times.
Editor Diane Smyth said: “What’s particularly exciting for us is that it’s being downloaded by readers all over the world, making BJP a truly global brand.”
The BJP iPad app costs £9.99 for a six-month subscription or £18.99 for a year. It features highlights from the print title as well as extra interactive content specially designed and commissioned for the iPad.
Issue 5 is now out, featuring an in-depth interview with Daido Moriyama, an icon of 20th century photography, ahead of his blockbuster Tate Modern show with William Klein.
