Trinity Mirror appears to be a rolling back a policy of only allowing members of Facebook to comment on website stories.
The policy was implemented in January 2013 and was controversial at the time.
When it was announced by the Manchester Evening News one reader, called Voter, said: “One reader named 'Voter' said: “[L]ike many men and women of a certain age, I do not have a 'Facebook' account. Goodbye – it was nice knowing you. There are other newspaper sites where there are no restrictions.”
The Manchester Evening News announced the launch of a new commenting system this week which will enable readers to log in once and comment on any Trinity Mirror title.
The title said in a story: “Manchester Evening News is changing the system we use for allowing readers to comment on our stories.
“We know this is disruptive but we think the new system we are introducing is worth it.
“You can sign onto the new commenting platform using your preferred method. This could be through your social media account – Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Yahoo, Instagram, Pinterest or Google+. You can also register using just your email address.
“Once you’ve registered to comment on our title you can then comment on any Trinity Mirror title.”
