Save Our Sources campaign helps Press Gazette win six nominations in Online Media Awards

By Dominic Ponsford

Press Gazette has garnered six nominations in this year's Online Media Awards – including two for the Save Our Sources campaign.

The campaign, launched last September, helped prompt the Government to change the law in March ensuring that police requests to view journalists' phone records must have the approval of a judge.

Save Our Sources saw Press Gazette named as a finalist in the best campaigning/investigative journalism category and it was also nominated as editorial campaign of the year.

Press Gazette news editor William Turvill has been nominated in the breaking news category for his exclusive report revealing that a Russia Today London correspondent had resigned in protest at the station's allegedly biased coverage of the Malaysia Airlines plane crash. The story was shared more than 5,000 times on social media.

Press Gazette editor Dominic Ponsford was nominated for best blogging/commentary for a portfolio which included some forthright defences of journalists facing prosecution under Operation Elveden. Ponsford has also been nominated in the category of online editor of the year.

Other nominated titles in this year's Online Media Awards include: Sky News, Exaro, Vice News, Huffington Post, BBC News Online, The Guardian and ITV News.

The Online Media Award said in a statement: “This year has seen a record number of entries with an extremely high standard and only the best work has been nominated.”

Press Gazette was this week awarded a runner-up prize in the British Media Awards for Save Our Sources and was also a finalist in the Paul Foot Award.
