Phone-hacker Dan Evans launches crowdfunded bid to report on the European refugee crisis

By Dominic Ponsford

Convicted phone-hacker Dan Evans has launched a crowdfunded campaign to support his reporting on the European refugee crisis from the Greek-Macedonian border.

Evans is seeking to raise £1,600 to continue reporting on what he describes as "Europe's modern morality tale". He is seeing the money via Byline, which is also publishing its work.
Evans admitted phone-hacking whilst at the Sunday Mirror and News of the World as well as conspiracy to pervert the course of justice and conspiracy to commit misconduct in public office. He was sentenced to a nine-month suspended prison sentence after he gave full evidence about the extent of alleged wrongdoing which he witnessed at both newspapers.
In an email promoting the Evans crowdfunding campaign, writer Peter Jukes said: "Dan Evans was a witness of truth at the phone-hacking trial, and was a key source of information for the civil cases of phone-hacking at the Mirror Group. But what happened to him?
"Dan has been through seven years of hell during which, as a trial witness, he has not been allowed to follow his passion – the career of a journalist.
"But now the criminal cases are over, Dan is back with an amazing project on Byline about the refugee crisis.
"Last week Dan and photographer Kit Oates spend days reporting from the Idomeni Refugee camp on the Greek Macedonian border. He's written a report here. More to come.
"It's brilliantly researched, recorded, photographed and written. It shows a great journalist getting back to his true passion after the cheque-book driven celebrity journalism so many were forced to follow in the industry
"So please help reward proper journalism, and the redemption of a former tabloid hacker, by chipping in a bit of support."
