By John Reynolds

Storyful, which describes itself as a social news agency, is beefing up its operations in the UK by launching a dedicated news channel, as it looks to attract new publishers to sign up to its social media verification service.

News UK, which acquired the business in 2013, is launching what its calls a “UK Newswire” channel and is doubling the size of its London team to ten.

Storyful is hoping to cash in on the growing demand from newspapers and other publishers for stories generated through social media.

Storyful’s business is based around verifying the authenticity of content on social media for news providers as well as locating social media content for brands.

Its news channel publishes social media content across a range of topics including breaking news, politics, social trends and the weather, which publishers can purchase, along with archive material and curated Twitter lists.

Storyful claims that it can give advanced notice of content before it begins to trend on Twitter.

Storyful, which was founded in Ireland, has already launched a similar channel in Australia.

Rahul Chopra, chief executive of Storyful, said: “Whether in the news, in marketing or in the conversations we have everyday, social media has redefined how we tell stories.

“With three of the most shared publishers being based in the UK, this is the right time to better serve our partners in the market.

“The UK, as a whole, is increasingly social, and we think there will be growing demand for verified social content from publishers and marketers in the years to come.”

Storyful customers include the Wall Street Journal, the BBC, New York Times, ITN and Channel 4 News.
